In the white room

Day 9 in our new home, and I’ve been working on getting my room into shape, as well as trying to unpack some of the boxes in the rest of the house.

My work room is the second bedroom, north-facing and about 11 feet square. The previous owners painted it peach and installed a dark red/pink/brown carpet.

The walls are the wrong colour, and the carpet had to go.

You’d think peach would be quite easy to cover, but it’s had four coats of good quality white paint (yes, that’s brilliant white – it looks grey because of the light) and it’s still a little bit patchy. I think I may well just call it done and put lots of pictures up. In any case most of the worst bits are where the furniture will go.

The floorboards seem pretty good, so I’m painting them too.

I’ve just painted enough of the floor to get some furniture into position, because the desk and drawers are currently forming an obstacle course in the main bedroom, and then I’ll be able to paint the rest of the floor.

I ache all over, but I’m liking it so far.

  1. My sympathies!

Our predecessors painting the (cold, north-facing) dining room ice blue. It took two coats of white before I dared go over it with the golden yellow which has made it a pleasanter room, and as for the dark turquoise ceiling – I think it got to five coats of white.

It was worth it, but oh my word, the aches!

    1. I hear you! It’s a long time since I ached so much, and in muscles I didn’t know I had 😆
Dark turquoise ceiling though… 😳 Good work!

  2. I learned my lessons on trying to cover wall color that continued to bleed through. If you use a product called Kills it will cover any existing paint in one coat giving you a clean white. Hope that helps. Agree that the carpet was a must go.

    1. Thanks Lilo – we do have a bright red chimney breast downstairs that also has to go, so something like that will be useful. Are you in the US? I don’t know if we have that particular product here in the UK but we can probably find something similar. Thanks for the tip.

  3. goodness, I do believe my grandparents had the same color carpeting back in the 1960s …

four coats of paint is quite a lot of effort, but at least you don’t have to worry as much about drips on the floor 😉

    1. ha, that’s true. The house was built in 1960, but the carpet appeared to be relatively recent – but scratchy and fairly low quality, with awful thin underlay, so at least I know I haven’t destroyed a premium axminster.

    2. Glad the flooring was salvageable. Will be interested to see how the paint lasts. Good job on the 4 coats!

      1. I can always do another coat on the floor if necessary, and I’ll get a rug for where my wheelie chair will go. But yes, will also be interested to see how hard wearing it is. If it doesn’t work then I’ll probably have it laminated.

  4. It looks like you have lots of greenery out the one window…lots of birds visiting and singing for you? Moving is never fun but hopefully your new studio will bring you much joy, as well as the rest of your new home. Enjoy and don’t try to do everything at once!.

    1. ha, that’s exactly my problem, trying to do All The Things. I’m trying to pace myself. That’s the only window, and the view is mostly the tops of trees in neighbouring gardens. Lots of songbirds, which is lovely, and squirrels. I’ve noticed the squirrels enjoy digging, so the garden is going to be fun when we get round to it.
