Shrinking

Sometimes life feels too big, and on these occasions I like to focus on something very small, and something completely different from stitching or mixed media art. Something that’s just for me and nothing to do with work or accomplishing anything.

You may remember the little twelfth-scale Sid Cooke shop kit I started last year.

The interior (about 10″ square) is decorated but needs furnishing in a more sensible way than this:

I’ve been having a little play with some of the tiny things.

I made the shop counter out of scraps of wood and some recycled perspex packaging. The front comes off for access to the ‘glass’ shelf.

on the (real life) table

Some decades ago I had a past life as a miniaturist, and these days it’s quite a challenge for the ageing eyes. A challenge in a good way though. Sometimes I wonder if the tiny world gives me a sense of control that the real full-size world can’t.

Whatever it is, I find myself retreating into smallness at the moment and feeling better for it. And in any case, all work and no play, etc etc.

I hope you’re making time to connect with the little things that make you happy too.

  1. That makes me want to visit it!! The attention to detail is wonderful but maybe my ageing eyes can’t spot what to play the vinyl LPs on 😊 Mags

    1. haha, you got me! I’ve been fretting about how to make a record player for days 😄😆 Maybe the shop only sells LPs, I said to myself, but no, I protested, that’s too much of a cop-out – I will figure something out eventually!

  2. Thank you for sharing—it is a balm to my spirit and you are such an inspiration even on those days when shrinking is indicated.

  3. Oh, yes, very familiar! Now I’ve got that talk delivered, I can maybe get back to stitching, which is much better for me than panicking excessively about public speaking. I’m intending to get better at dealing with public speaking, but maybe not this month…

  4. I have always loved tiny things. As a Fist Grade teacher for 35 years I always read the book series called The Littles and then the chikldren made their own littles house. such fun

    1. how lovely! what a happy memory 🙂 You will have shaped and encouraged many little minds ❤️

  5. Miniatures are so charming. During a recent visit to the UK I got to see the doll house at Windsor Castle. Incredible. Maybe they have a spare gramophone they could lend to your shop.

    1. ha, now there’s a thought. Been busy screen-shotting vintage record players this evening, I reckon I could rustle something up. I agree though, there is something very delightful about miniatures.

  6. This is lovely. I really like what you’ve done.

Will have to figure out what would be good for me to do. I seem to make everything in to work.

    1. Thanks so much Em, we all need some down time and I’m not good at knowing when to stop working. Also it’s hard to strike boundaries when your work is also the thing you love doing… Mostly my problem at present is all the stress from everything else that’s going on, so shrinking the world feels like a way of minimising the impact of stress too. I’m guessing. I hope you find that special thing 🙂

      1. That’s the bit of being self-employed! I’m not joining the ranks for 6 months or so but my brain is already there.

I love that this is working that way for you. And really, another slow, considered project but one that’s just for you. 🙂
